Consumer Advice When Getting Quotations
Your trees are the most valuable plants in your garden. Poor advice or poor quality tree surgery and pruning damage trees. Bad advice can also be catastrophic for your trees.
There are several things to bear in mind when employing a tree consultant or tree work contractor:
- Are they insured? - ask for proof, is it for what they are proposing to do and the people on site? Are there any HEIGHT RESTRICTIONS on their policy? Ask the questions!! A good arborist WILL have CORRECT cover!
- Are they qualified? - NPTC qualifications are a MUST relating to the procedure you require to have carried out, as well as another qualification of expertise.
- Reputation? - Ask your local tree officer if they have a good or bad reputation in the area of expertise you intend to use them in.
- Documents? - Do they relate to what they are doing?
- Any reputable contractor or consultant can show relevant documents!
- Use a known local contractor whose work you have seen if at all possible.
- Are they a member of a professional organisation?
Things to avoid:
- Anyone who knocks your door offering "to prune your trees".
- Anyone who appears to be an opportunist or rogue.
- Anyone forcing you to commit there and then.
- Anyone alleging its causing damage without checking with a real arborist or engineer.
- Elevated pricing for straight forward jobs.
- Anyone who can't answer your questions about your trees and shrubs.
- Someone offering to "do it right now" for best price.
Always:
- Get written quotes, detailing exactly what you want to have done.
- Keep a record of all information supplied.
- Check credentials.
- Ask a friend to be with you if they offer a quote at a later date and you feel intimidated.
